Potlatch History

Potlatch began in 1990 with a handful of teams and a tiny budget. Sixty Acres Park in Redmond, WA had ample room for the fledgling tournament. In fact, for the first few years, Potlatch used only a fraction of the available space. The tournament’s focus was the Northwest Coastal Native theme of giving, emphasizing spirit and friendship. Teams brought gifts for their opponents and cheered at the conclusion of each round of games.

From these humble beginnings, Potlatch has become a premier tournament and a summer destination for as many as 2000 ultimate players from across the continent and the world. Potlatch showcases two of the greatest elements of ultimate, competition and sportsmanship. Many of the best players in the world come to compete for the coveted Potlatch trophy. But for those with more modest goals, Potlatch provides an atmosphere of camaraderie and sharing unlike any other tournament.

2004 saw the tournament narrowly miss the century mark. 99 teams competed in the largest Potlatch ever. 2004 also saw the Potlatch trophy travel across the border with the Wildcatz defeating Vagabonds in front of a crowd of roughly 1000 people.

2005 saw our first 100 team tournament! Team Canada beat Vagabonds in the finals.
