Player Safety, Rules, and Spirit of the Game
Since recreational ultimate games do not have referees or game officials to help monitor events, on-site responsibilities usually fall to team captains. We rely on your leadership to help resolve all sorts of problems. For example, we have provided some information for you on the website on the Game Day Resources tab.
We also want to highlight player safety. Specifically, we want to emphasize clearly one point: it is every player’s responsibility to play avoid contact on the ultimate field.
As the USA Ultimate 11th Edition Rules state, “It is the responsibility of all players to avoid contact in every way possible.” The website further notes that players should, “Avoid contact in every way reasonable possible, while still playing Ultimate. Some contact is inevitable, but players have an affirmative obligation to make reasonable efforts to avoid contact.”
Another rule notes that “Reckless disregard for the safety of fellow players or other dangerously aggressive behavior (such as significantly colliding into a stationary opponent), regardless of whether or when the disc arrives or when contact occurs” is a foul.
While ultimate is a non-contact sport, as noted above, some contact is inevitable. Some amount of accidental or incidental contact is expected. However, deliberate or dangerous contact should be avoided. We encourage you all to help promote this ideal at league games this season.
When contentious situations arise at the fields, we encourage players to embody the principles of Spirit of the Game in their efforts to self-officiate and manage the game in a calm and responsible manner.
The League Coordinators are always willing to help. Please feel free to contact us at email@example.com with any comments or questions about player safety.
