Got Ideas?

In response to feedback from parents, players, coaches, and organizers at the October 2008 Youth Summit, DiscNW has developed a new leadership structure for its youth programs.  We are seeking people who are passionate about the sport of Ultimate, who appreciate its benefits for youth, and who have ideas about how to make the Northwest Ultimate scene even stronger.  Everyone is welcome, and parents are especially encouraged to apply.  Please contact Wynne Scherf, Director of Youth Operations (DoYO), at youth.director@discnw.org, if you are interested in sharing your ideas as a member of any of the following sub-committees:

1. High School Leagues, chaired by Fozz Forsberg
a.  Brainstorm other new league options as needed.
b.  FUTURE: Manage/organize current HS leagues, with guidance of DoYO.
c.  TASK FORCE (2009): Help develop new MoHo club league (may work with Outreach &
     Growth Sub-Committee on this item).
d.  TASK FORCE (2009): Investigate and plan, manage, organize a new Seattle Fall HS 
     League in 2009, with guidance of DoYO.

2. Middle School Leagues, chaired by Jeff Jorgenson
a.  Brainstorm other new league options as necessary.
b.  FUTURE: Manage/organize current HS leagues, with guidance of DoYO.
c.  TASK FORCE (2009): Investigate and plan, manage, organize a new Eastside MS League
     in 2009 (probably fall), with guidance of DoYO.

3. Elementary School Leagues, CHAIR NEEDED!
a. Brainstorm other new league options if necessary.
b. FUTURE: Manage/organize current ES leagues, with guidance of DoYO.

4. Tournaments, chaired by Frank Nam and Rusty Brown
a.  Help put in bids for all championship events.
b.  FUTURE: Manage/organize current tournaments, with guidance of DoYO.
c.  TASK FORCE (2009): Brainstorm/create plans for new annual elite tournament in Seattle.

5. Outreach & Growth, chaired by Ben Goldfarb
a.  Create and distribute new and current learning resources (e.g., fact sheets, videos, etc.).
b.  Investigate models used by successful club sports in schools (e.g., lacrosse).
c.  Work with DoYO to promote ultimate in PE programs.
d.  FUTURE: Manage/organize free play opportunities.
e.  TASK FORCE (2009): Plan ways to provide grants and scholarships to new teams.
f.  TASK FORCE (2009): Volunteer recruitment (may work with Coaching sub-committee on
     this goal).
g.  TASK FORCE (2009): Parent communications
        i.  Preferably chaired by a parent.
        ii.  Create guidelines for a Parent Auxiliary (to be formed in 2010)
        iii.  Develop parent database (2009) and recruit members for Parent Auxiliary (2010).
h.  TASK FORCE (2010): Investigate sustainable practices for providing free play
     opportunities.
i.  TASK FORCE (2012?) Media: Under guidance of DoYO, communicate with media and
     investigate methods to gain media coverage.
j.  TASK FORCE (2012?) Alumni:
        i.  Develop methods for tracking graduates.
        ii.  Help with development of Alumni Association.
        iii.  Manage Alumni Association events and communications.

6. Coaching, chaired by Sam Terry
a.  Plan and organize training sessions with guidance of DoYO.
b.  Develop DiscNW Coaches’ Code of Conduct.
c.  Develop coach database.
d.  Help create online coaches' portal.
e.  TASK FORCE (2009): Problem-solve sustainable methods for recruiting and providing
     incentives to coaches (Work with Outreach Task Force—5f above).

7. TASK FORCE (2009): Single Gender, chaired by Rusty Brown
a.  With members from HS League, Tournaments, MS League, determine specific needs for
     single-gender play.

We're also looking for members for the new Fundraising Sub-Committee, chaired by John McCormack, and charged with the following dutes:

a. Brainstorm, manage, and organize fundraising events.
b. Investigate grant sources.
c. Seek and apply for corporate sponsorship for specific events.
d. Develop fundraising model for youth teams (similar to Girl Scout Cookies)
e. TASK FORCE (2009): Work with DoYO and ED to plan silent auction.
f. TASK FORCE (2009): Work with DoYO to develop a sponsorship proposal for 2009 Spring
   Reign and/or camps.
g. TASK FORCE (2010): Lobby for renewal of Families and Education Levy, which provides
    funding for SPS Fall MS League and expires in 2011.
