JOB DESCRIPTION Community Organizer

Washington CAN! is a statewide social, economic, and racial justice organization with 30,000 individual members. Washington CAN! is seeking a community organizer who can help us grow and mobilize our membership base and play a lead role in local, state, and federal campaigns for universal health care, immigrant rights, and other issues.  We are seeking organizers who are energetic and willing to learn, and have a passion for social justice.



Job Title: Community Organizer

The Community Organizer will prioritize outreach and leadership development of community leaders, build our community organizing committees, and develop a base of engaged activists and leaders to complement our staff team and drive our work to change the health care system and achieve comprehensive immigration reform.

Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Conduct in-person and phone meetings with members to build relationships and develop community leaders
Build and work with local and statewide Leadership Teams that are comprised of Washington CAN! members
Plan and coordinate turnout to public events, trainings, and forums
Lead phone banking and door-to-door outreach efforts to engage members and new activists
Gather and databank stories from our members who are directly affected by injustice
Support of Washington CAN!'s legislative agenda and activities, including media, logistics, legislative visits, trainings, and mobilizations. 
Raise funds through special events and other activities.
Help with volunteer and intern recruitment and management


A typical week for a Community Organizer includes approximately time on outreach, home visits, and leadership development, and time planning, in meetings, and coordinating events. Events and leadership development activities frequently occur during weekends and evenings.



Qualifications:

         Demonstrated commitment to fighting for racial and economic justice.

         Language skills a plus, particularly bilingual English/Spanish.

         Experience working in a diverse environment and ability to work with people of varied backgrounds.

         Willingness and ability to travel around state and region, as well as to Washington, D.C.

         A motivated self-starter who is accountable to goals.

         Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills.

         Experience doing community, labor, canvass or electoral organizing a plus.

         Experience with and commitment to working on racial justice issues and/or working in communities of color.

         Strong personal time management skills and the ability to work under pressure.



Compensation:

         Salary depending on experience.
