Youth Club Draft Hat League 2010

Frequently-Asked Questions

1. What are the paperwork requirements for the league?

See the Registration section on the main event page.

2. If this is a DiscNW league, why do I have to fill out the UPA paperwork?

We have sanctioned this league with the Ultimate Players Association (UPA).  Any time we sanction an event with the UPA we need to collect the UPA player paperwork.  We sanctioned this league with the UPA because that is required for it to be a YCC-qualifying league.

3. Why does there have to be a “qualifying league” for YCC? Why can’t any Seattle area player try out for the YCC teams?

YCC team applications that are based on a youth league get preference when bids to the tournament are assigned. On the other hand, "at-large" bid applications (those not based on a UPA-sanctioned youth league) get a spot in the tournament only if there is space left after league-based bids are assigned. Thus, DiscNW applies for YCC bids based on our youth leagues, because we want to ensure that Seattle gets a bid to the tournament. According to UPA rules, when a city applies for a bid based on a youth league, only players who played in that league are eligible for the tournament.

4. Why don't you just make the high school spring team league the qualifying league for YCC?

Preference for spots in the YCC tournament are given to team applications that are based on a UPA-sanctioned club league.  A club league is one that is not affiliated with high school teams.  In fact, the tournament will expand as needed to guarantee a spot for all teams based on club leagues.  School-based leagues get a spot in the tournament only if there is space left after all club leagues are assigned a spot.  Since there are only 8 spots available in each division for the entire nation, we thought it best to guarantee our spot by basing our application on a club league.

5. Is this the SOLE YCC-qualifying league?

Yes and no.  Players wishing to try out for the 2010 YCC teams must have participated either in this league or in the 2009 version of this league.

Players wishing to try out for the 2011 YCC teams may participate in either this league or the 2011 league, when it comes around.

6. How many teams will there be, and how many players will be on each team?

We anticipate 6 boys' teams and 4 girls' teams, with 10-18 players each.

7. What is the attendance policy?

The league will be most successful if players attend as many games as possible.  It is important for everyone to attend so that games are not forfeited. That being said, UPA rules state that players who are interested in qualifying for the 2010 YCC teams are required to attend only two league games. There is no official league attendance policy, but team coaches might set team-specific attendance guidelines.

8. Will there be practices?

Feedback after the fall 2009 version of this league suggested that players and coaches would like practices.  We will make every effort to schedule at least one practice for each team, but ultimately it will depend on how many players register, field space, and coaches' scheduling needs.

9. Who are the coaches?

We are currently in the process of hiring coaches.  We will post biographies about the coaches when they are hired.  All coaches will undergo a background check to insure that they are safe to work with children.  If you are interested in coaching or can recommend a coach, please contact [Enable javascript to see email].

10. Will this league replace YCC tryouts?

Absolutely not. Players who want to qualify for YCC will be required to participate in the league, but it is not considered a “tryout."  For information on tryouts, click here.

11. I don’t want to try out for YCC. Can I still play?

Yes, we hope you will join us!

12. Will 8th graders be welcome to play in the league?

Yes, 8th graders are welcome to play in the 2009 Youth Club Draft Hat League!  However, the DiscNW Youth Strategic Committee has adopted a policy that players must have completed their 9th grade year in order to try out for the Seattle YCC teams, effective 2010.

13. What is the level of play in this league?

Our coaches and captains are prepared to welcome players of all skill levels to this league.  However, many experienced players participate in this league in order to qualify for the Youth Club Championship teams (see above).  Thus, new and intermediate players should feel comfortable with a brisk pace of play while they learn.  For players who prefer a slower introduction to the game, please check out our summer camps and free MoHo/Mini MoHo clinics ([Enable javascript to see email] or [Enable javascript to see email]).
