Tacoma Youth Ultimate Clinic (2010)

Tacoma Ultimate Camp FAQ

Why was the Tacoma Camp changed from a week-long camp to a one-day clinic?

Unfortunately, we didn't have enough paid campers to be able to afford a full week of fields, stipends for counselors, camp supplies, and discs and jerseys for all campers.  However, several counselors were willing to volunteer their time for one day so that campers still get a fun and educational Ultimate experience.

How many years has the Tacoma Youth Ultimate Camps existed?

The first Tacoma Youth Ultimate Camp was in 2007, but this is the first Tacoma camp since then. DiscNW first partnered with Seattle Parks to run Ultimate camps in 2002 and has been running its own Seattle camps since 2004.

Are there camps for children younger than middle school?
We don't currently provide an elementary school camp in Tacoma, since we don't believe the demand is great enough. If you would like an elementary school camp for next year, please contact us at [Enable javascript to see email]. In the meantime, we do have camps for 8-11 year olds in Seattle. Click here for more information on Seattle Ultimate Camps.

Is this a coed camp, or will boys and girls be separate?

If we have enough registrants, camp will include a little of both single-gender and coed play.  If registrations are low, it will be primarily coed.

What is the weather policy?
We play rain or shine!  Camp may be cancelled due to extreme weather, though that hasn’t happened yet. We make plans for safe shelter in case of severe weather. On hot days, we make sure to provide ample shade, and we take extra breaks for hydration and rest. We also suggest sunscreen, well ventilated headwear, shatterproof sun glasses, and (yes!) rain gear for all campers.

Who are the counselors?
Our counselors are experienced college and adult recreational Ultimate players from the Tacoma community; coaches of Tacoma area middle school, high school, and college Ultimate teams; and a couple of experienced counselors from our Seattle camps.

How early and late are counselors at the fields?
Counselors are expected to be at the fields at least 15 minutes before each session starts. We require all campers to be picked up no later than 15 minutes after a session ends each day, though at least one counselor will stay at the site until all campers have left.

Is there a maximum number of campers?
Yes.  We will close registration at 110 campers.

What are the arrangements for lunch and snack?
Campers should eat lunch before they arrive.  They should bring their own snack; we'll take a short snack break in the afternoon.

When camp is over, where can my child play Ultimate?

DiscNW managed the first Tacoma High School Ultimate Team League in the spring of 2010, and we plan to continue providing that league indefinitely.  We don't currently provide a middle school team league, but once we are aware of four local middle school teams, you can bet we will (hint: email [Enable javascript to see email] if you have a team)!  For the last two years, we have also provided fall youth clinics called TacoMoHo, so keep your eyes peeled for those.  Last but not least, there are spring tournaments and leagues galore in Seattle.  Click here to read about our Seattle youth events.
