DiscNW Advocacy Updates

Parks & Seattle Center Committee Members Named

This group willdeliberate and make recommendations on legislative matters relating to parks, public grounds, recreation, community centers, the Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Aquarium, and Seattle Center.

Seattle City Council Candidate Responses to Sportsfields Questionnaire

Friends of Athletic Fields and DiscNW have questioned the City Council candidates on what matters most to us: more and better fields in Seattle. Read the results at the FAF website. In keeping with our 501(c)3 status, DiscNW does not endorse any candidate for office. All candidates were given equal opportunity to reply to the questionnaire and their unedited responses are presented to help you make a better choice on Election Day. Don’t forget to vote on November 6th!

Georgetown Playfields Update

DiscNW field advocates have been working with park planners to enlarge the area that will be covered by synthetic turf so that we can fit two ultimate fields there. As a result there will be enough turf space for two ultimate fields (at 37 yards wide each).

King County Parks Levies Pass

Both of the King County Parks Levies on the Primary Ballot of August 21st passed! The "King Co Parks Support" levy renews the existing levy that provides ~50% of the parks operating budget. The other levy is a new measure intended to support acquisition of open space, build trails, and support the Woodland Park Zoo.

We're Back at Magnuson!

Spring League returns to Magnuson park in March and April. Welcome back home, ultimate lovers.

The redevelopment of the sports meadow at Magnuson is Phase 1 of the entire plan. Phase 2 will comprise four synthetic athletic fields (at the fields we called Sand Point); three of those four are planned to be lit. The four fields planned include a soccer, a rugby, a softball, and a baseball field. All but the baseball field were designed with lights. For more about SP/Mag check out this page

City of Seattle Budget & Parks

Check out the recently approved Mayor's budget here. It contains many important improvements to local playfields.

Shoreline Bond Passes

Voters in the city of Shoreline approved an $18.5 million dollar bond issue by approximately 70% to 30%. Proceeds from this bond will pay to convert Twin Ponds from sand to field turf, and will also pay for numerous improvements at other city park fields throughout the city. DiscNW supported this bond with money for the pro-bond campaign and by encouraging Ultimate players in Shoreline to vote. If you are a Shoreline resident and voted in favor of the bond, thanks for supporting the bond!

Some of the money from this bond will result in the installation of new synthetic turf at Twin Ponds park. There are also plans to sew in ultimate field markings into the turf.
